Introducing the new non-invasive skin tightening and lifting treatment with Plasma Pen!

What is plasma?

Plasma is a state of matter – just like solids, liquids and gases – that’s created when energy and gas collide. It reacts to your body’s electrical charge, which means that when plasma gets close to the surface of your skin, a small burst of energy is created. The energy is used to treat the skin.

How does it work?

The Plasma Pen is handheld device that harnesses energy found in the air to create its very own source of plasma energy. The pen is then held just above the skin and a small stream of energy is produced as the plasma reacts to your body’s inherent electrical charge.

Every time this stream of energy, known as the ‘plasma arc’, makes contact with your skin a tiny scab is formed, while the area around the scab is instantly tightened. This results in skin tightening. After the Plasma Pen has created a series of small scabs in the area of skin you’re targeting, the scabs will soon fall off to expose your new, tightened skin. The heat from the plasma arc also boosts your skin’s production of collagen in the affected area, meaning that your skin will continue to tighten months after treatment.

What can it treat?

The plasma pen can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, tighten sagging skin and improve pigmentation.

Usually applied around the eyes and eyelids, the non-surgical treatment is also used to tighten the throat area, instantly remove skin tags and minimise acne scars, age spots and stretch marks.

So the plasma pen does more that just skin lifting and tightening.

Can everyone have the treatment?

As darker skins can produce pigment around areas of trauma, any patients with a Fitzpatrick score of 3 or more should have pre-treatment with hydroquinone to prevent these spots appearing. The creams can then be used afterwards to settle any skin reactions. Speak to Dr Kim if you are concerned about your skin tone and pigment formation.

What is the down time?

There will be small scabs on all the touch points and these will take 3-7 days to fall off. Please don’t pull these off too soon otherwise you may get discolouration of the skin due to trauma. You will be given creams to apply to the area but dry healing is encouraged.

How many treatments do I need?

The effects of the plasma pen treatment are permanent, so you can book in for an additional session three months after your first treatment, many people only return for a top-up three or four years down the line as they age. Skin tightening with plasma pen may need to be repeated if you have severe wrinkling or sagging.

Some patients in who are in the perimenopause or who are post-menopausal may need additional treatments to stimulate the fibroblast that have slowed down due to the lack of estrogen.

If you feel you could benefit from more treatment after your first session, speak to Dr Kim to book in another session.

Will it hurt?

Prior to your treatment you will undergo a two phase numbing procedure for 30 mins that will make the treatment comfortable and you should be pain free during the procedure. If you have any concerns about your pain threshold, please speak to Dr Kim.

How long does the treatment take?

The treatment can take 1 hour for smaller areas but up to 2 hours for large areas like the neck. This includes the numbing time. Numbing cream will only be removed before each area is treated to ensure the numbness remains as long as possible.

Any possible complications?

If the treatment has been applied to your eye area, you can expect some light swelling and redness which will disappear after three to four days.

As is usually the case with scabbing, the affected area might also feel itchy for a few days after your treatment.

Darker skins can see post inflammatory pigmentation (a darkening where the treatment was applied), therefore all patients with darker skin tones need pre and post treatment with a blending cream and retinol.

What does it cost?

Small areas such as the upper eyelid or lower eyelid, crows feet, central frown, upper lip or nasolabial folds are all £500/session.

Larger areas such as the upper and lower eyelids, the forehead and central frown, the neck, the lower face, the decolletage are all £800/session.

Interested in multiple areas – email Dr Kim for a quote.
