A Young mother dies after a non medic delivers a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) treatment: Understanding the Importance of Choosing a Qualified Medical Professional for a safe aesthetic treatments.
The tragic recent death of a young, mother of five, following an alleged Liquid Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure performed by a non-medical practitioner is a sobering reminder of the risks associated with undergoing aesthetic treatments with unqualified individuals. It highlights the critical importance of choosing a qualified, experienced medical professional to ensure your safety and well-being.
As a GMC-registered doctor with over 20 years of medical experience, I want to share why qualifications, proper technique, and a strong understanding of anatomy matter greatly when it comes to aesthetic treatments, and how I prioritize safety in every procedure I perform.
Why Medical Training Matters in safe aesthetic treatments
With a background as an emergency doctor, I have spent years developing the skills to recognize and manage complications swiftly and decisively. This expertise is invaluable in aesthetic practice, where being able to identify and treat issues promptly can prevent adverse outcomes. Unlike non-medical practitioners, I am also governed by the General Medical Council (GMC), which means I am held to strict ethical and professional standards designed to protect patient safety. Unfortunately, these regulations do not apply to non-medics, making it crucial to choose your practitioner carefully.
Minimizing Risks with Ultrasound during aesthetic treatments
I use ultrasound technology during certain injectable treatments, which allows me to visualize the underlying tissue structure and identify critical anatomy, such as blood vessels. This not only improves precision but also significantly reduces the risk of complications, such as accidental intravascular injection, which can be extremely dangerous if not properly managed.
Aseptic Technique and Infection Control for safe aesthetic treatments
Infection is another major risk when undergoing any aesthetic procedure. To ensure a sterile environment, I always use sterile packs for each treatment. This means that every needle, filler, and product is single-use, eliminating cross-contamination and greatly reducing the risk of infection.
Additionally, the use of single-use needles and syringes for every patient, along with strict adherence to aseptic technique, is a cornerstone of my practice. This level of care is not always guaranteed with non-medics, who may not have the same training or accountability to adhere to strict medical protocols.
I also wear a mask when treating patients. I implemetned this during COVID and have coninued to use this practice since along with stringent handwashing, hairnets and handwashing protocols.
Recognizing and Managing Complications during filler and wrinkle treatments
One of the most critical aspects of choosing a qualified medical practitioner is the ability to recognize when something isn’t right and knowing exactly how to respond. As a doctor with decades of experience, I am equipped to handle emergencies, should they arise. Quick, decisive action can make all the difference in a complication scenario, something non-medical injectors may not be trained or prepared for.
Why Qualifications Matter for Your Safety
In the UK, the aesthetic industry remains largely unregulated for non-medical professionals. This means that a person without any formal medical training can legally administer treatments like fillers, which can carry significant risks if not performed correctly. However, as a doctor, I am required to follow stringent medical regulations that prioritize patient safety, and I stay up-to-date with the latest techniques, safety protocols, and complications management strategies.
When considering aesthetic treatments, always ask:
Is your practitioner a qualified medical professional?
Do they have extensive experience in both aesthetics and emergency management?
What safety measures do they have in place?
Are they governed by a medical body, such as the GMC, which requires them to adhere to strict regulations?
